Michael A. Crane
As an Illinois licensed attorney, private detective, and security expert, Michael A. Crane offers The Lake Forest Group as General Counsel more than 30 years of experience in investigations, security, regulatory compliance, behavioral threat assessments, and training in workplace violence prevention by leveraging business operations, legal, human resources, and security consultant perspectives.
As Senior Vice President and Corporate Counsel at Hillard Heintze, Mike established himself as a nationally recognized attorney, strategic business advisor, and corporate executive knowledgeable in best practices in security risk management. He conducted security assessments for corporate and high net worth individuals and family offices; directed behavioral threat assessments for at-risk clients; provided in-house legal advice; created security plans for public and private sector clients, including Fortune 100, higher education, and medical marijuana; and delivered training on emergency management, workplace violence prevention, and active shooter plans.
As Executive Vice President and General Counsel of IPC International Corporation, an industry leader in mall security staffing across the globe with more than 450 properties worldwide, Mike provided innovative security solutions and oversight of the security guard workforce and legal, human resources, and insurance liability claims administration business sectors.
After working for the Illinois Bureau of Investigation, Mike was an attorney for the Chicago Police Department where he was an Assistant to the Deputy Superintendent of Inspectional Services, a trial attorney in the Cook County State Attorney’s Office, and an attorney for a Chicago law firm, handling both civil and criminal cases.
Mike has lectured extensively on workplace violence and legal liability in the security industry, taught at Webster University in the graduate program for Security Management, and been called as an expert witness in security related litigation. He contributed to the publication of the FBI’s Workplace Violence-Issues in Response and has authored chapters in two books on workplace violence.
Mike has been designated a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) by ASIS International (ASIS) and is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). He was a founding member of the ASIS Standards and Guidelines Commission, oversaw the development of the first standard on Workplace Violence Prevention for the American National Standards Institute, and is the Program Director for the ASIS Asset Protection III Course. He is a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), the Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations, and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
Mike graduated from Coe College with a BA in Business Administration, received his JD from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, and graduated from the Executive Leadership Program of the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security.
